My name is Will Kern. I am a 21-year-old Bio (premed?) major at the Franciscan University of Steubenville (in Ohio). I grew up in Palo Alto, California, and moved to West Lake Hills (outside of Austin) Texas a few years ago with my family.

I spend an obscene amount of time in the lab with my leukemia cell lines, and an equally obscene amount of time reading research papers on mostly relevant material. My dream profession would involve mixing my love for medicine (and my desire to help others) with my fascination with materials science.

Glad to know I'm not the only one in medschool here on Oppo! Ever thought about which area you'll be specializing in?

I have a ton of respect for you people in medicine. I couldn't do half the shit yall do as far as biology and chemistry are concerned.

I'm not in Med School yet... Mcats are next summer woo!

Before I had any experience shadowing doctors, I was pretty sure I wanted to do Oncology. The research that I have been doing at school is a testament to this. Last summer, though, I had the opportunity to shadow an ENT (and good friend) and my conversations with him about medicine and medical professions have left me less sure. When your profession has to do with serious and life-threatening illnesses like cancer, you have to deal with a greater deal of stress due to the gravity of the situation that the individual is in. When I decide what I want to do I'll have to take that into consideration

Every doctor that I have ever talked to has told me just about the same things: (1) that I should specialize in whatever they happen to specialize in, but also (2) if you don't know what you want to specialize in, that's okay because you will change your mind 4 or 5 times during residency anyways.
